Stocks struggled midday Thursday as a string of lackluster earnings reports and downbeat news in the manufacturing sector dampened any bounce from a housing report that some said could have been much worse.

Wall St. sinks on fresh subprime jitters
U.S. stocks fell on Thursday as renewed concerns about losses in the U.S. subprime mortgage sector sparked a sell-off, causing investors to flee riskier assets for the relative safety of government bonds.
